With all that's happening in the world, it sure feels like we are being destroyed from within.  Which calls to mind an address  Abraham Lincoln made to the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois in 1838. He warned us against the dangers of mob violence and the erosion of respect for law and government.

How then shall we perform it?--At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it?-- Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow?

Never!--All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

And a little under 200 years later, it seems to have come to pass.

Innovative new design in wind energy production

Spanish company Vortex Bladeless Ltd., has designed turbines that have no blades. They generate electricity by wiggling.

Simply put, whirlwinds produced by the wind cause the turbine to vibrate. Magnets at the base of the device repel with the same amount of force, and this kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and used to provide power.

That's pretty amazing, and you can read more technical details in the attached article.

Rocket radar?

DARPA's AtmoSense program seeks to use Earth's atmosphere as a global sensor by measuring acoustic and electromagnetic waves propagating through the atmosphere, and attempting to trace them back to a specific disturbance event that took place on Earth. In doing so, DARPA hopes to be able to trace underground explosions or other national security threats using the signals detected from the atmosphere.

SuperSonic flight

This is cool.  Chinese researchers have unveiled a supersonic aircraft so quiet that it can zip passengers at 1.6 times the speed of sound and still be as quiet as a hairdryer.

A few words about tariffs.

Here's an article about how chatGPT provided the same answers as T-rump when asked about tariffs.  So they pose the question: Did team T-rump simply use chatGPT?
And in other news, China is retaliating by cutting off some supplies that the US doesn't have access to. Things critical to national defense.

And in still other news, this is a well articulated, succinct explanation of how tariffs are destroying businesses, and where the problems lie with just "making it in America."

It makes me angry that this is where we're at. And does T-rump, or many in the GOP care?  They do not.  They're gaslighting and telling us how "great jobs" in manufacturing are oh-so-close.

And by the way, this comment - attached to the video above - is another piece to this puzzle. Another problem that will further make America anything but great.

The Latest Offshore Betting Odds for the Next Disney CEO

This is funny.  Sportsbooks are actually taking bets on the next Disney ceo.

The leaderboard includes Dana Walden chair of Disney entertainment, Josh D'amaro who is the head of Disney parks, and Jimmy Pitaro, the head of espn.

The article notes that while Walden is the betting favorite, she is personal friends with Kamala Harris. And that may play against her because Disney doesn't want  to antagonize T-rump.

Bonus item: this is an interesting perspective on how the car race that takes place the dolphins stadium in Miami Gardens adversely impacts local residents.

And as the article notes, originally the race was planned for downtown Miami. But locals were opposed to it, and they happen to be wealthy and majority white.
